These days, people for the most part believe that governments should try to promote the general welfare of the populations they serve. The disagreements come over how to do that—what goals to focus on, what policies to adopt, and so on. These questions are usually approached through broad intellectual frameworks, such as political ideology or religion, and much time is spent debating the finer points of various doctrines.

Nekatere zgodbe so bolj senzacionalistične od drugih, a nosijo isto sporočilo: nevarni vročinski valovi bodo vse pogostejši in silnejši zaradi globalnega segrevanja.

Doch die weltweite Reaktion – eine verstärkte Betonung des Abkommens in Opposition zu Trump – bietet ebenfalls Anlass zur Sorge.

Host to a large diaspora population, Canada has long focused much of its official and private aid toward Haiti – the hemisphere’s poorest country. Recently though, it has pulled back: Haiti fell from top recipient of aid in 2010 to 16th place in 2015.

They say the sequel is always worse than the original, but Al Gore’s first film set the bar pretty low. Eleven years ago, “An Inconvenient Truth” hyped global warming by relying more on scare tactics than science. This weekend Mr. Gore is back with “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.” If the trailer is any indication, it promises to be more of the same.

Gov. Jerry Brown has won praise for promising that California will live up to the Paris accord despite President Trump’s withdrawal from the treaty. He also signed a climate deal with China last month, and has unveiled plans for a global climate summit in San Francisco next year. Earlier this week, California lawmakers voted to extend the state’s cap-and-trade program for another 10 years.

The message is clear: With a few other states, California is going it alone — an approach that is popular locally and resonates with much of the world.

Trump merece ser criticado por abandonar o acordo climático de Paris sem nenhum plano de acção alternativo. Mas, ignorando a realidade, o resto do mundo não está a fazer muito melhor.

A decisão do presidente Donald Trump de retirar os Estados Unidos do Acordo de Paris deixa o país sem uma política para o aquecimento global. Isso é alarmante. Mas a resposta do mundo – redobrar os esforços, em oposição a Trump – também deve causar preocupação.
