The next administration must recognize not only that climate change is a real problem but also that we are not on course to solve it. The next president needs the courage to discard our current feel-good but ineffective solutions. Ending our reliance on the fossil fuels that have powered two centuries of economic growth will require an energy revolution.

Bangladesh's manufacturing sector has grown steadily as the country has industrialised. Manufacturing now accounts for 30 percent of GDP, nearly double the share of agriculture. That industry is largely driven by the readymade garment (RMG) sector, which represents a whopping 85 percent of all export earnings and employs 4 million people, 80 percent of whom are women.

Dhaka is one of the fastest-growing megacities in the world. A population of just 3 million in 1971 has ballooned to 18 million today. This unprecedented urban growth has resulted in a city more densely inhabited than Tokyo, Shanghai, Mumbai, or any other major city (Robert Gallagher).

The capital's growth partially represents the progress of the Bangladesh economy, which has grown atover 6 percent annually (7th Five Year Plan). The city's transport system, however, hasn't kept up, and Dhaka now has some of the worst traffic congestions in the world.

La corrupción es un problema gigantesco en todo el mundo. En África, se estima que una cuarta parte del PIB del continente "se pierde en manos de la corrupción cada año". En América Latina, el Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo cree que la corrupción puede costar el 10 % del PIB anualmente. En la única revisión integral basada en encuestas de empresas y hogares, el Banco Mundial calcula que el costo directo total de la corrupción es 1 billón de dólares anuales.

Die Interamerikanische Entwicklungsbank geht davon aus, dass Korruption Lateinamerika Jahr für Jahr 10% des BIP kosten könnte. Im einzigen umfassenden Überblick, der auf Umfragen in Unternehmen und Haushalten basiert, schätzt die Weltbank die jährlichen Kosten durch Korruption auf 1 Billion US-Dollar.

Meziamerická rozvojová banka je přesvědčena, že korupce v Latinské Americe může rok co rok ukrojit 10 % HDP. V jediném komplexním přehledu založeném na průzkumu mezi podniky a domácnostmi Světová banka dochází k úhrnným přímým nákladům korupce na bilion dolarů ročně.

More than six kilometres of water separate the southwest region from the rest of Bangladesh. The longstanding Padma Bridge project holds potential to span that gap both physically and economically, linking the region with Dhaka, Chittagong, and the rest of the country to the east.

Bangladesh's public sector faces serious challenges. Poor infrastructure is one of the main factors that hold back economic growth. Government-funded health clinics struggle to provide the population with quality, specialised services.  And beyond primary school, quality public education opportunities are extremely limited. These are just a handful of the challenges, and they are partly due to a stark fact: the country has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios in the world.

Im vergangenen Jahr gingen 1 Billion US-Dollar an die Korruption verloren. Das ist Geld, das nicht für den Ausbau von Gesundheits- und Bildungssystemen, die Verbesserung von Ernährungsqualität oder den Umweltschutz zur Verfügung stand. Laut Transparency International haben 68 Prozent aller Länder der Welt ein ernsthaftes Korruptionsproblem, und kein Land bleibt vollständig davon verschont.

V loňském roce byl kvůli korupci ztracen zhruba jeden bilion dolarů. Jde o peníze, které nebyly k dispozici na zkvalitnění zdravotní péče, rozšíření přístupu ke vzdělání, zlepšení výživy nebo vyčištění životního prostředí. Podle organizace Transparency International má 68% zemí světa vážné problémy s korupcí a žádný stát vůči ní není zcela imunní.
