BJORN LOMBORG @ The Oxford Union - Global Problems, Smart Solutions

TIME: Oct 14, 2013, Monday at 2pm.

https://www.facebook.com/events/665112550179688/

Dr Bjorn Lomborg is the author of best-selling and controversial book ‘The Skeptical Environmentalist’, and is considered to be one of the most prominent intellectual commentators on climate change. He caused a storm in the scientific community by claiming that the current consensus on how to deal with environmental concerns is largely mistaken. Arguing that “global warming is by no means our main environmental threat”, Dr Lomborg has previously campaigned against the Kyoto Protocol and other measures to cut carbon emissions in the short-term, instead arguing for adaptation to short-term temperature rises as they are inevitable, and for spending money on research and development for longer-term environmental solutions, and on other important world problems such as AIDS, malaria and malnutrition.

He is here to give an interactive session in which the audience can take part in prioritising global problems via an online voting tool.

The event is open to both members and non-members as it is during our Freshers’ Fortnight Open Period.

Join the Oxford Union in the office or online before Thursday 24th October for discounts on membership and access to events after the date. (http://www.oxford-union.org/joining/join)

Global Crises, Global Solutions

June 3, 2013 The Vancouver Club, Vancouver, at 6pm.

June 4, 2013 The Petroleum Club, Calgary, at 6pm.

June 6, 2013 Fairmont Château Laurier, Ottawa, at 7:30am.

June 6, 2013 Ritz-Carlton Montreal, Montreal, at 6:30pm.

June 7, 2013 The Fairmont Royal York, Toronto, at 12pm.

The "skeptical environmentalist" applies his passion for practicality to the premise that if we cannot solve every problem in the world, which ones should we fix first?

Using cost-benefit analysis based on years of work from 60 of the world's top economists, Lomborg takes you through thirteen global issues including global warming, health, food, education, and natural disasters. Using our own judgement in looking at some of the best ideas for each problem, how effective do you think these solutions might be?
